Sumitomo Corporation and Japan AE Power Systems Corporation receive a series of orders for substation projects in the Kingdom of Bahrain

 

Sumitomo Corporation (President and CEO: Susumu Kato; Headquarters: Chuo-ku, Tokyo, Japan; hereinafter, “Sumitomo”) and Japan AE Power Systems Corporation (President and Director: Takashi Kano; Headquarters: Minato-ku, Tokyo, Japan; hereinafter, “AE Power”) have recently received four orders for Engineering, Procurement and Erection of a Substation, amounting to about 6 billion yen in total, from the Electricity & Water Authority (hereinafter, “EWA”) and private companies in Bahrain.

The two orders from EWA include the construction of seven new 66-kilovolt (kV) substations and expansion and modification of the existing three 220-kV substations and two 66-kV substations. AE Power will collectively undertake design, manufacturing and delivery of Gas Insulated Switchgears (GIS*), the main substation equipment, as well as procurement, installation and testing of other substation equipment. They have also received two orders from private companies for two 66-kV substations. Completion and delivery for EWA and the private companies are both scheduled to take place between September 2010 and November 2011.

These projects have been designed and ordered to meet rising power demand for housing, commercial facilities, industrial parks, and other facilities newly developed in the country. It is part of thetransmission network expansion projects that aim at securing stable power supply from power station under construction in the southern part of the country.

Sumitomo and AE Power have delivered more than thirty substations in Bahrain since 2002 (amounting to over 30 billion yen in total). The recent contracts represent the fruit of their technical reliability, which has been highly evaluated through the past achievements, as well as their maximum effort expended to meet the customers’ urgent demands for expanding the transmission network.

Both companies position Bahrain as one of the most important market in the Middle East, where electricity demand is expected to continue to grow from now on. They hope to make yet further contributions to the development and expansion of Bahrain’s transmission network through further orders for substation projects.

* GIS: Gas Insulated Switchgear, a switchgear that uses gas as an insulator
