Sumitomo Corporation and Japan AE Power Systems Corporation receive order
for electric substation equipment from state-owned power company in South Africa (ESKOM)

Sumitomo Corporation (President: Motoyuki Oka; Headquarters: Chuo-ku, Tokyo, Japan; hereafter, “Sumitomo”) and Japan AE Power Systems Corporation (President: Masakazu Mori; Headquarters: Minato-ku, Tokyo, Japan; hereafter, “AE Power”) have received an order for Auto transformers and Shunt reactors for substations from state-owned South African power company ESKOM Holdings Limited (Headquarters: Sandton City, South Africa; hereafter, “ESKOM”). The ordered equipment is to be used in Substations to be built through South Africa.
This lump-sum contract covers the design, engineering, manufacture, installation, and testing of seven 765-kV, 667-MVA Auto transformers and 16 Shunt reactors (765-kV, 133-MVAR). Bidding took place in March 2006 and attracted offers from a number of major manufacturers in addition to Sumitomo and AE Power.
Sumitomo and AE Power were awarded the contract following a high evaluation of the superior technical capabilities of AE Power. Sumitomo and AE Power last concluded a major contract to supply 765 kV Auto transformers and Shunt reactors in March 2003. Thus, this order represents the first large-scale contract in four years.
The ordered substation equipment is to be installed at each 765 kV transmission grid substation supplying power from coal-fire power plants on Highveld, mainly in Mpulanga, South Africa, to the Cape area. The power project is being carried out to meet rising demand for power in the Cape Area, where the FIFA World Cup South Africa 2010TM will be held in 2010.
